Success is at the end of every dilemma. It is the end of conflict, the solution of a problem. Success is the goal being pursued.
To me, success can be defined by counting accomplished goals, taking into consideration the amount of effort given in order to do so. A person is successful if he/she is capable of overcoming the troubles, problems and failures that he/she encounters. It is a sense of completion and gratification from good work done. It is about satisfaction.
You don't necessarily need to win your battles. You just have to give it your best shot and, hopefully, the rest will follow according to plan. Life is a learning process, and somewhere in between of futile efforts and defeat, you just have to admit that you can't win 'em all. But, it's still worth it, if you think positively you can say that despite the disappointment brought by failure, you are contented with what you did.
Happiness is always a choice.
