... even if the hungry cooks of Kowloon House wage a strike. I first read about it in the status message of my sorority sister Abi, and then just recently at Bulatlat.com. I have nothing against activism and labor unions waging a strike against their employer/s, especially if it's reasonable (given example: wage increases). But with the current financial crisis, I only have this to say:
"One man's wage increase is another man's job."
We have what we call the reserve army of labor. Let me connect the dots. People get discontented with their salaries because they aren't paid for their labor's value. They complain to the management and get nothing in return. At the end of a deadlock (if there was even collective bargaining) employees wage a strike. Employers feel no remorse to fire workers who wage a strike, why? There are far too many unemployed people who would not hesitate to take up vacant jobs. Let me repeat:
"One man's wage increase is another man's job." In other words, employers who are aiming for the maximization of their utilities, resources and paid labor would rather hire another man - or two, even - for the job instead of raising the wage of one employee.
I'm not antagonizing anybody. I'm just saying.
